Congratulations to the Decatur HIgh School Culinary Department! DHS WON!!!!!
Their winning food will be thermostabalized and will be flying in the next 6-12 months to the International Space Station.
There were NASA taste judges at the breakfast entrées competition. This part of the competition counts for 60% of the final score. The criteria for this item was that it be a breakfast entrée, between 200-400 calories, 13g or less fat, 4g or less saturated fat, 250mg or less sodium, 12g or less sugar and 2g or more dietary fiber. The students had to determine the best way to process their entrée for space. They did a lot of experiments and taste test before they came up with our final product, Orange-Blackberry Croissant Breakfast Casserole.
Our students had to submit a technical paper about the nutrition needed for the astronauts in space and the different ways to process food for microgravity. Then they had to make a two minute video about the whole journey which counts 15% of the score.
Great job DHS Culinary Department!!!!
